Cooperative democracy in action

It might be discussed sparingly, but cooperatives have a rich democratic life. At Desjardins, democratic life is in full swing during the first 5 months of the year.

The Regional General Meetings will take place as of next week. From January 25 to February 4, 2012, all 16 regions of the Desjardins network and the group caisses will hold Annual General Meetings. Delegates from all caisses will attend 1 of these 17 meetings, during which developments of the previous year are discussed and priorities and challenges of the current year are established.

Moreover, on occasion, members of the Regional Council of Representatives are elected. These members play a significant role on the regional level and attend the 4 or 5 meetings held each year by the Assembly of Representatives, which includes members of each Council of Representatives. Presidents of all 17 councils of representatives sit on the Board of Directors of Desjardins Group.

During Regional General Meetings, local delegates discuss proposals made by caisses so they can be submitted to a vote at the Fédération des caisses Desjardins Annual General Meeting, in late March. Over 1,000 delegates from the entire caisse network attend this meeting.

Since caisses are members of the Fédération cooperative, the Annual General Meeting is an opportunity for delegates to learn about financial results and exercise their authority by addressing issues of concern and voting on the proposals before them.

Other Desjardins components also hold General Meetings at that time. That's why we refer to them as Desjardins Group General Meetings. The speech of the Desjardins Group President is a highlight of the event. Last year, the speech of President Monique F. Leroux was broadcast live on the web.

After the Desjardins Group General Meetings are held, the Annual General Meetings of each caisse take place in April and May. All members can attend these meetings. A few weeks before the meeting is held, each caisse must publish a notice of meeting and specify the procedure to follow for members who wish to submit their candidacy to sit on the Board of Directors or Board of Supervision of their caisse.

It's very important for members to attend the General Meeting of their Caisse. It's a great opportunity for them to express their views, learn about their cooperative, influence things and vote.

Have you ever attended your caisse's General Meeting?
