The real cost of transportation - Part 1: driver's licence

Before you can even think about getting a car, you have to get your driver's licence. We all know that. But what's the first step? How many steps are there? And how much does it cost?

Step 1: Driver's education course

The driver's education course is mandatory and costs around $825. It includes a 24-hour theoretical component and a 15-hour practical on-road component. You must be at least 16 years old to sign up.

Step 2: Learner's permit

The learner's permit is valid for 18 months and costs about $70.

To get it, you must:

  • Have parental consent if you're under 18
  • Provide a certificate from the driving school to prove that you passed Phase 1 of the driver's education course
  • Pass the vision test
  • Fill out the medical declaration from the Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec

To keep it, you must:

  • Always drive accompanied by a person who has had a valid driver's licence for at least 2 years
  • Have fewer than 4 demerit points on your driving record
  • Comply with the zero-alcohol rule
  • Not drive between midnight and 5 a.m.

Step 3: Knowledge test

The exam costs $11.

To take it, you must:

  • Have had your learner's permit for at least 10 months
  • Make an appointment online or by phone

Step 4: Road test

The road test takes about 1 hour and costs $28.

To take it, you must have:

  • Passed the driver's education course
  • Had your learner's licence for at least 12 months
  • Passed the knowledge test

Step 5: Probationary licence

Your probationary licence is valid for 24 months and costs $175.

After passing your road test, you'll receive your probationary licence. This is the final step before getting your driver's licence.

To keep it, you must:

  • Have fewer than 4 demerit points on your driving record
  • Comply with the zero-alcohol rule
  • Respect the rule concerning the number of passengers aged 19 or younger you're allowed to carry between midnight and 5 a.m. (if you're 19 years of age or younger and have had a probationary licence for less than 12 months)

Step 6: Driver's licence

Congratulations! You got your licence. Now, hang on to it!

A driver's licence costs $84 a year.

To keep it, you must:

  • Not drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • Obey speed limits
  • Respect the Highway Safety Code

Don't drive without a licence! If you do:

  • Your vehicle will be seized for 30 days
  • You'll be fined between $600 and $3,000
  • You'll incur towing and impounding charges

Total costs: over $1,195
