How to save money on back-to-school shopping

It's time for back-to-school bargain hunting!

August means back-to-school bargain hunting!

There's no time like August if you're looking for a deal. On everything from pencils to pencil skirts, stores are rolling out the best deals to attract your back-to-school dollars.

But before heading to the mall, remember that the best way to save money is to reuse the things you already have.

Items you can keep reusing year after year:
  • Backpacks
  • Binders, dividers and plastic sleeves
  • Lunch boxes
  • Pencil cases
  • Rulers
  • Scissors
  • Calculators
  • Staplers
  • Anything that's still in good condition or almost new
Items you can probably get another year out of:
  • Gently used notebooks, lined or graph paper, folders, duo-tangs
  • Pens and pencils
  • Erasers, liquid paper
  • Name labels that are still legible
  • Notepads
  • Sportswear
Items you can store away
Full notebooks, last year's agenda and class notes should be stored away in a box just in case you need to look through them again.

Even if you managed to reuse everything from last year, here are some more savings tips:

Avoid overbuying
Don't fall for great deals that make you want to buy extra things you'll never use.

Find the best value for your money
When deals are too good to be true, it's important to look at the quality of the product. It can be more economical to buy a more expensive item once rather than buying the same cheaper item year after year!
