Semaine des régions 2018

Guy Cormier serves as honorary chair

Quebec City, February 5, 2018 - Desjardins Group and Place aux jeunes en région (PAJR) are continuing their partnership for the seventh edition of Semaine des régions, a week-long initiative to promote job opportunities in rural communities to recent graduates in Quebec's urban centres, encouraging them to explore these unique regions. Once again, Guy Cormier, President and CEO of Desjardins, will be serving as the event's honorary chair.

Semaine des régions was created by PAJR, an organization that promotes rural living to young graduates, to address two major issues facing rural communities: a lack of skilled workers and an aging demographic. The week runs from February 5 to 9 with events in Montreal and Quebec City. PAJR hopes to bring together like-minded partners concerned about the sustainability and development of rural areas, reminding everyone that these regions are key to Quebec's overall growth.

"Now more than ever, rural areas across Quebec are facing significant labour shortages. Through Semaine des régions 2018, PAJR is proud to be able to offer a platform for career, business and internship opportunities in rural communities," said Mélanie Fortier, President of PAJR.

Partnering with Place aux jeunes en région for nearly 30 years, Desjardins Group helps build vibrant communities across Quebec and supports the province's youth to help them achieve their goals. "Through Semaine des régions, we're encouraging young people to build their future in rural communities. Those who embrace this opportunity will be bringing their much-needed talent, skills and energy to these regions," said Guy Cormier.

The week revolves around three main events:

  • Opening panel: Panellists representing businesses, development agencies and municipal governments tackle the issues surrounding recruitment in a rural market - Maison des régions, Monday, February 5, 1 p.m.
  • Job fair: A unique event showcasing employment opportunities available exclusively in rural areas - Complexe Desjardins, Thursday, February 8, 12 p.m. to 8 p.m.
  • School visits: Once again this year, representatives from the PAJR network will be visiting 20 schools (selected based on regional labour needs) in the greater Montreal and Quebec City areas.

Semaine des régions is geared specifically to young adults between the ages of 18 and 35, as well as students enrolled in certain educational programs (based on regional needs) at the vocational, college and university levels.
